SUMMARY:ISD 2026 Tutorial: Advancing Agility and Shared Understanding in Di
gital Ecosystem Design using Digital Twins: The Scene2Model Approach
DESCRIPTION:The increasing complexity of digital ecosystems continues to ch
allenge the development and extension of information systems. Managing cha
nge across multidisciplinary teams and enabling innovation at scale requir
es approaches that foster both agility and shared understanding. Design th
inking plays a crucial role in this context\, supporting agile ideation\,
prototyping\, and testing through collaborative exploration.\nHowever\, tr
aditional design thinking approaches are often constrained by synchronous
collaboration\, reliance on physical artifacts\, and limited scalability.
This tutorial introduces the Scene2Model approach developed within OMiLAB\
, which enables the transformation of design thinking artifacts into digit
al twins. These digital representations can be shared\, refined\, and sema
ntically enriched across distributed environments\, supporting reuse and i
ntegration with business assets.\nBy combining conceptual modeling with de
sign thinking\, Scene2Model bridges informal design artifacts and formal a
bstractions used in information systems development. The approach enhances
co-creation\, supports shared understanding\, and facilitates the transit
ion from early ideation to structured system design.\n\nSpeakers\nWilfrid
Utz received his PhD from the University of Vienna\, Research Group Knowle
dge Engineering in the field of metamodel design and conceptual structures
. He has been involved in international research and innovation projects a
nd gained experience in the field of modeling method conceptualization\, m
eta-model design\, and implementation of modeling tools using ADOxx in var
ious application domains. His research and professional interest relate to
the knowledge representation using meta-modeling concepts and platforms.\
n\nIulia Vaidian received her master’s degree at the Vienna University o
f Economics and Business in Supply Chain Management and gained experience
in design thinking\, business process management\, and conceptual modellin
g concepts and technologies in her responsibilities as part of the Researc
h Group Knowledge Engineering from the University of Vienna and the OMiLAB
team. She is responsible for the organization of the NEMO Summer School S
eries\, has been involved in various EU funded projects\, and coordinates
the OMiLAB Community of Practice.\n\nAlexander Völz received his master
’s degree at the University of Vienna in Business Administration. Subseq
uently\, he gained experience in applying and teaching conceptual modeling
\, metamodeling\, and design thinking in his position as Research and Teac
hing Assistant at the Research Group Knowledge Engineering. His primary re
search interests focus on applied knowledge engineering and management in
the context of intelligent systems. These skills are actively applied to i
n his current role as a research staff member of OMiLAB to contribute to v
 arious research projects.
